Learn to Fish
Donít know which end of the rod is which? Want to know how to successfully catch different types of fish? Look no further than the Cardiff Bay Water Activity Centre!
Our FWA (Federation of Welsh Anglers) qualified coaches can help you on your way with taster sessions in coarse or sea fishing. Alternatively, if you would like a more in depth introduction they can lead you towards an OCN (Open College Network) qualification in fishing.
Our taster sessions can be for anyone from age 6 upwards and can last for an hour or a whole day in coarse or sea fishing. By working on a small 1 to 3 coach to participant ratio this ensures that all participants get good quality tuition and therefore will progress their skills and knowledge quickly.
The OCN award is aimed at children and young people and takes a total of 20 hours, which will give you a good base knowledge about angling and the environment. Not forgetting a recognised qualification at the end of your sessions to set you well on your way to successful fishing!
The course covers subjects such as geography relating to the water cycle and weather patterns. Biology relating to plants and animals found in the environment, food chains, anatomy of the fish and fish handling. The course also looks at other fishing issues such as line strength, using weights to balance floats, testing curves of rods and measuring water depth. This therefore gives all participants a thorough knowledge to take to other environments and to be a successful angler.
