RYA Instructor Training Courses

Becoming an RYA Powerboat Instructor is a great way to share your passion for boating with others. A PBI is able to teach Level 1, Level 2 and potentially the Safety Boat course, and an Advanced Instructor is able to teach the Intermediate, Advanced and the Tender Operators course as part of an RYA Training Centre.

These courses are not designed for those with little experience of powerboating or with weak skills. CPD continuing professional development - days are available in the region for those who need their personal skills refreshing.


RYA Powerboat Skills Assessment

A 3 Day course, assessed by an independent Trainer on the 3rd day, which allows you to teach the RYA Powerboat Level 1 & 2 courses (plus RYA Safety Boat if you hold that qualification.

During the course you will cover the principles of practical instruction, lesson planning, teaching styles, use of questioning, preparation and use of visual aids, assessment of students; learning, explanation and presentation of theory subjects, the structure of the scheme, planning progressive teaching sessions, preparation of boats and equipment, teaching methods up to RYA Powerboat level 2.

To be eligible, you must be at least 16 years of age, have passed the skills assessment, hold a Level 2 Powerboat Certificate and a valid first aid certificate and have either 5 seasons of powerboat experience logged (in a range of boats) OR 1 season for those who use powerboats as part of their full-time occupation.
